Renovation & Extension . 1920’s Butterfly Plan House

Working closely with the client, a number of key interventions have been carried out in sympathy with the building's Arts and Craft influences. A new timber clad extension has been designed to preserve the strong symmetrical form of the original building - to complement rather than replicate - a blend between the traditional and the contemporary. At the heart of the house, a new open living, dining, family area has been created with the kitchen at its centre.

The new living space gives directly onto the new terrace and cantilevers over the lawn to heighten its elevated position. Perched over the garden, a simple glazed corner window provides uninterrupted views across open country.

A new top lit pyramidal roof volume catches the afternoon sun. Orientated to take full advantage of both woodland and far reaching views, it opens to a new raised external dining space above the main terrace.

The original separation between the west wing and central area of the house has been reconfigured into a sequence of distinct spaces that flow into one another, open to the wider landscape beyond.

A new serpentine garden wall connecting the garage to the main house incorporates a porchway, emphasising the new entrance, providing greater security and privacy. On the strength of this project, work was commissioned for the reconfiguration and extension of a neighbouring property for which planning permission was granted in negotiation with Ashford Planning department.
